Sophie Thompson is an English stage and screen actress. In 2016, she was nominated for an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls.
In addition to her screen roles, Sophie Thompson returns regularly to the stage, though in recent years, she's been seen in more plays than musicals, including She Stoops to Conquer (National Theare), Clybourne Park (Royal Court and West End), Female of the Species (West End) and Measure for Measure (Shakespeare's Globe).
However, it was Sondheim musical Into the Woods, in which she played The Baker's Wife at the Donmar Warehouse in 1998-9, that won her the 1999 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.
Three years earlier, in 1996, she was also Olivier nominated, this time for Best Supporting Performance in a Musical, for another Sondheim production at the Donmar, Company.
Sophie is the younger sister of Emma Thompson and second daughter of actors Phyllida Lloyd and Eric Thompson.
