There are some theatre productions, both big and small, that aren’t going to make it through the current shutdown and we’re sad to report that when London Theatreland gets back to some kind of normal Waitress will be missing.
The producers of Waitress have announced that the West End production at the Adelphi Theatre has closed. The multi-award-winning Broadway transfer had been originally booking until 4 July 2020, with Lucie Jones and David Hunter returning to the lead roles of Jenna and Dr Pomatter on 23 March.
Jones and Hunter were due to take over from Grammy Award winner Sara Bareilles and Olivier and Tony Award-winning actor Gavin Creel, but as the coronavirus crisis worsened the US stars were forced to return home and the production closed as part of the West End shutdown.

Waitress officially opened at the Adelphi Theatre on 7 March 2019. Based on the 2007 motion picture written by Adrienne Shelly, it is the first Broadway musical in history to have four women in the four top creative team spots, with a book by Jessie Nelson, a score by singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, choreography by Lorin Latarro and direction by Tony Award-winner Diane Paulus.
A UK and Ireland touring production of Waitress is due to begin at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre on 14 November 2020 before taking in Manchester, Birmingham, Milton Keynes, Glasgow, Plymouth, Dartford, Eastbourne, Liverpool, Woking, Stoke, Ipswich, Aberdeen, Bristol, Canterbury, Dublin, Nottingham, Cardiff, Truro, Llandudno, Leeds, Hull, Southend, Wolverhampton, Oxford, Edinburgh, Southampton, Northampton, Crawley, Sunderland, Wimbledon, Bromley and Sheffield.
