The London Musical Theatre Orchestra is celebrating its second birthday by announcing details of the last two concerts in its already successful 2017 season. Musical Theatre Review's Angela Thomas shares more info on the season, as well as the full casting announcement...
Following on from the LMTO’s return to Cadogan Hall on 21 July with Leonard Bernstein and Hugh Wheeler’s CANDIDE, there will be a performance of Jerry Herman’s MACK & MABEL at the Hackney Empire on 23 September and a reprise of last year’s seasonal sell-out performances of Alan Menken’s musical A CHRISTMAS CAROL at the Lyceum Theatre on 11 and 18 December.
Revealing the LMTO line-up for the rest of 2017, founder Freddie Tapner said:
“I am thrilled that LMTO has reached its second birthday. It’s a great pleasure to be also announcing both the second half of our 2017 season. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of the musicians, actors, creatives and management team for shaping LMTO into what it is today – I could never have dreamt that we would be where we are now when I put that note on Facebook back in 2015.”
Tickets are already on sale for the LMTO’s concert presentation of CANDIDE which will feature Rob Houchen (Les Misérables, Titanic) in the title role. Tapner will conduct the 34-strong orchestra.
Candide follows on from the LMTO’s star-packed concert versions of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s State Fair, A Christmas Carol, and the concert staging of Honeymoon in Vegas with the show’s composer Jason Robert Brown as guest conductor.
First performed as an operetta on Broadway in 1956, Bernstein’s musical Candide is based on the satirical novella by Voltaire. Additional lyrics are by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Bernstein himself. Orchestrations are by Bernstein who also provides narration for the concert version with John Wells.
Tickets for Mack & Mabel and A Christmas Carol will go on sale to priority members in mid-July.
