The world premiere production of Crime and Punishment: A Rock Musical will run at The Scoop in London from 31 August until 25 September 2016.

London’s open air theatre season returns as part of the London Bridge City Summer Festival with the world premiere production of Crime and Punishment: A Rock Musical, presented by Gods and Monsters Theatre. Featuring songs by the legendary Toyah Willcox, this new musical reimagines the 19th century masterpiece by Dostoyeksky, first published in 1866.

Crime and Punishment is one of the best known and influential novels in the world of literature. It tells the story of a student who wishes to kill a ruthless moneylender who terrorises the poor in St Petersburg and asks whether murder can ever be justified.

This new production is directed and adapted for the stage by Phil Willmott, as well as featuring specially written songs and favourite tracks by British singer Toyah Willcox and her song-writing partner Simon Darlow.

Talking about being involved with the show Toyah Willcox said: “Who could resist this chance to help introduce theatre-goers, great literature and steam punk all in the one show, performed for free to such a huge and multi-cultural audience, in this iconic, beautiful venue?”

Meanwhile, director Phil Willmott commented: “I’m particularly excited that we’re collaborating with Rock legend Toyah Willcox and Simon Darlow whose impactful, timeless roster of hits and new songs, so perfectly match the raw, urgent energy of Dostoyevsky’s characters and message.”
