Speak Up | Volume Two | National Theatre

We're looking back at Year 2 of Speak Up, our secondary school programme that aims to encourage new ways for young people to think, see and bring about change. Young people work collaboratively as equal partners with their teachers, artists, local arts organisations and the National Theatre to co-create local artworks and creative projects in response to issues which matter to them. In Year 2 we ran 1,811 sessions across 56 schools in England, employed 166 artists who have inspired creativity through Speak Up sessions and held 32 training events for teachers and artists. We are committed to reducing our carbon impact, and have set ourselves ambitious targets to achieve Net Zero as an organisation by 2030. In May 2021, we started working towards the basic standard of the Theatre Green Book – a new guideline for making sustainable theatre. Three years on, and now all productions staged at the South Bank in 2024 are meeting the basic standard, with further progress being made to reach intermediate and advanced levels of sustainability. This success could not be achieved without immense collaboration, between the skilled makers, designers and creatives. Step into the National Theatre Archive and discover the stories behind the Greek Tragedies that have been staged at the National Theatre, expertly dissected by Lucy Jackson, Assistant Professor in Ancient Greek Literature at Durham University, and Erin Lee, Head of Archive at the National Theatre. In the next 4 episodes, Lucy and Erin explore the practicalities of staging an Ancient Greek play in a modern theatre building, using the records held at the National Theatre's Archive. This episode looks at two productions of Euripides' Bacchae; an adaptation by Wole Soyinka staged at the Old Vic Theatre in 1973, and 'Bacchai' directed by Peter Hall in the Olivier Theatre in 2002.
