The festive period is approaching fast but we're not quite there yet! I'm busy filming and recording my 2017 Christmas Covers (which will be out in December) but to keep you going until then here's a cover of Golden Slumbers, also known as the song from the John Lewis Christmas Ad for 2017 - #MozTheMonster. I'm a big Beatles fan and I've wanted to cover more of their songs on my Channel for a while so when the new John Lewis Christmas Ad was released using a Beatles song I jumped at the opportunity. Jennifer Hudson recorded a cover of Golden Slumbers for the recent animated movie Sing and now Elbow have their own version of it too. Since Elbow have done such a nice job with their cover of Golden Slumbers for the John Lewis Christmas Ad I took my inspiration from that as well as adding some horns in to keep it soft but still epic. The Last Post is a traditional Trumpet or Bugle call and is often used as a final farewell at Military Funerals and is also known by many for it's use in Memorial Day ceremonies. But a few weeks later here's my brand new cover of the new song and boy am I pleased with this one. I have to admit I wasn't massively overwhelmed by Too Good At Goodbyes when I first heard it. Musically and lyrically there's not much too it so I allowed myself a lot of freedom when I was recording my cover of Sam Smith's new song. I used the basis of the song as a blank template and had lots of fun putting my own fresh new spin on the song rather than trying to reproduce it and I'm really pleased with the result. What I came up with for Too Good At Goodbyes is a cool piano Jazz/Pop hybrid that also features a bit of guitar and even a Sax Solo! Cover of the R&B and MoTown hit Shop Around by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles! I'm back with another golden oldie from the good old days of rock & roll. Back when I was in the musical Dreamboats & Petticoats we got to perform Shop Around every night which was one of the highlight of the show for me. My cover of Shop Around is a slightly more up tempo and funky the Smokey Robinson & The Miracles original version, but I absolutely loved having fun and coming up with my own way to play this incredible song. Shop Around is so catchy it's not hard to see why it went to the top of the R&B charts and was one of the first big successes for Motown Records and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Looking Up is a fantastic little song in my opinion - somehow it manages to go from acoustic pop to club music and even has a slightly mexican style instrumental in the middle in only the way a Barenaked Ladies song can manage. Since it's about looking on the bright side of life it seemed perfect for a little Ukulele cover so I busted out my Kala and rocked out! Earlier this year I released a cover of She - another of her songs - and ever since I've intended to record more covers of her original music. Recently Dodie released the single version of her song 6/10 (which is quite possibly my favourite of all her songs) as part of the build up for her next EP You. I absolutely love listening to this new version of this song with it's soaring strings and epic harmonies. I knew I wanted to record my own version of 6/10 but I'm not that great with stringed instruments... but brass instruments on the other hand are my forte (pun intended!) So here's a male cover of 6/10 by Dodie Clark with some lovely horn parts which I'm really quite proud of. (By the way, I'm well aware I got some of the lyrics wrong. I've always loved Oasis and this song is one of my favourites - even though it doesn't really sound much like an Oasis song. While liked the rhythm guitar led original version I wanted to put my own stamp on it hence the introduction of the piano and a sax solo... yes, a sax solo in an Oasis song! If Half The World Away sounds a little familiar to you there's good reason for that. It was used as the theme tune to The Royle Family and a cover version by Aurora was also featured in the John Lewis 2015 Christmas Advert, so it's had plenty of plays over the years. Banjolele Cover of LEANING ON A LAMPPOST - a George Formby classic which also features in the musical Me & My Girl! Long thought lost it revealed itself to be an incredibly early incarnation of the now popular Cover Video. The reel, despite being in black and white and scratched all over, still plays and now for the first time this video is being made public... _________ Most people think George Formby played a ukulele but most of the time he actually played a Banjolele - a sort of hybrid of both banjo and ukulele. I've had my own Banjolele for a while now and I've always wanted to make a video featuring it properly - so of course it had to be a George Formby song! Leaning On A Lamppost is a classic George Formby song and also features in the musical Me & My Girl too. I wanted to record this song in a similar style to how it would have been performed back in the 1930's with a fairly simple yet effective arrangement. Having the banjolele - George Formby's instrument of choice - was incredibly useful in really selling the style and sound of the cover! Originally performed by Dick Van Dyke, this is a beautiful song written by The Sherman Brothers and given my musical theatre background I couldn't resist recording a little cover of it. I also decided to feature a sax solo too - even though it's not my strongest instrument it felt like a really nice addition to the song. Epic LOOP PEDAL Keyboard Cover of VIVA LA VIDA by COLDPLAY! Today I've got an epic loop pedal cover of Viva La Vida - yes I know another Coldplay cover! The loop pedal has been rising in popularity in recent years (probably something to do with Ed Sheeran) and since I had a Boss RC-30 lying around I figured I'd have a go at using it. Most people only seem to use loop pedals with acoustic guitars but I couldn't find many people using them with keyboards and synths for some reason! It seemed like the perfect combination to me since keyboards and electric pianos can make so many different sounds that you can layer on top of each other. All that was left was to find a suitable song and Viva La Vida was the perfect choice. It all centres around a single pattern which was exactly what I needed to use the loop pedal. This all results in an epic sounding cover of Viva La Vida which you can see being built up on the loop pedal part by part! People had been asking if I'd ever do a cover of City Of Stars and I thought I'd get round to it eventually. Then Lionsgate (who made La La Land) launched a competition with Carrie Hope Fletcher and Pete Jams to record a cover of City Of Stars and I couldn't exactly miss that opportunity! #LaLaLandCover Since the competition stated the video had to be 2 mins or under you'll notice I've had to cut the song slightly to get it to fit. So I've done a bit of a mashup of the solo version of City Of Stars that Ryan Gosling sings on the pier and the duet version he sings with Emma Stone later in La La Land. I've also added a cheeky little trumpet solo for that added extra Jazz effect too!
