After suffering meningitis, street dancer Chris Fonseca was made deaf in both ears from a very young age. He dances with the use of a Cochlear Implant in one ear, and the sensation of musical vibrations through his body. In 2010, Chris joined the all deaf dance group, Def Motion. In 2014, he joined Studio 68 dance training academy as a teacher and choreographer. He is now a solo dancer whose musical theatre credits include In The Willows.
I participated in a short music video called “The Road to London,” presented by Sign Up Football for the Champions League final between Dortmund and Real Madrid, last month. As a born and raised Southeast Londoner, creating this magical video with the ‘A Night in Sign’ team was an honour - We are passionate about bringing this art form into the mainstream by combining elements of creative language from rap

I'm a dance artist, mover, choreographer, teacher, creative director, and ambassador specialising in Hip Hop and Street Dance styles. Born & raised in the heart of Southeast London, I work extensively across the UK and overseas, often receiving international invitations, funding & commissions. My earliest inspirations span from those impressionable days in my teens and a classic 1984 'breakin' dance movie. I appeared at the Paralympics opening ceremony (London 2012, UK). Since then, the preceding eleven years have offered me diverse experiences and illuminated my talents to become a versatile dance artist and creator. Nothing beats the feeling of being back in the studio with my favourite people. Special thanks to the Grand Plan Fund for awarding grants to creative people of colour in the UK to create a new cultural project involving poetry, painting, fashion, zines, music, food, flowers, photographs, workshops or events. I'm privileged to receive an award that supported ‘Feel The Beat’, Dance workshop 2.0, earlier this year. A space. Tools. Guidance. Skill sharing and networking are being shared with the next generation of #deafdancers to navigate and progress individually as professional dance artists. I participated in one episode of ‘Up For It?’ 2019 - The British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust’s new children’s series aimed at primary aged children to showcase deaf children's talent. I coached aspiring and talented dancer Joshua, who I had the pleasure of interacting with by sharing with him my knowledge and passion for dance. Watching his passion blossom, and will to excel to the next level amazed me! It reminded me of being back in the day when I first discovered my love for dance. As a black deaf dancer, a role model is rare, which I’ve never had in my time and another reason why I’m advocating and persistently supporting those that carry the chain for deaf dance in the community. To advance and become a role model for the future - the next generation, continuing doing what they love without barriers... Special thanks to Definitely Theatre for awarding my proposal a second-round bursary. The support enabled me to plan, develop and present a day of professional dance training, discussion, skill-sharing and networking specifically for the deaf dance community and the next generation of deaf and hard of hearing dance artists. The next generation is an inspiration and has greatness. I've stored special memories from the event to remind me why I continue passionately advocating for the deaf dance community. Such an authentic experience where all #deafdancers shared a studio to experience a struggle, learn, share skills and banter. What made us appreciate this unique training opportunity was the benefit of knowing that we are making progress, shaping and learning from shared information & movement, absorbing to be better and progress individually as dance artists. Thank you @bbcstrictly : It Take Twos for featuring me and sharing my story. Throughout my quest, I find myself constantly breaking barriers by doing what I love. The story behind this quest and purpose of breaking barriers by doing what I love was not an easy ride. After years spent creating my formula and discovering the right recipe that has helped me to overcome barriers. That formula is 3 'P's; Passion; Having passion is energy, created by always being obsessed and used as fuel to energise self-motivation that leads you to your purpose. Persistence; To be persistence is what makes the impossible become possible, whatever the circumstance or situation and as always it is a determination that exceeds doubt. Patience; Being patient is key, by trusting your process and knowing that getting the result you have always wanted does take time. Congratulations to Billy Bailey the winner of strictly come dancing 2020, and last year Rose Ayling-Ellis the first deaf contestant on SCD with Giovanni Pernice, congratulations again! *** | DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THIS MUSIC. Earlier this year, I revisited my ”choreographer’s memory lane” and there’s one particular piece from 2018 that I’ve always wanted to film, as an official dance video, but unfortunately it has been impossible due to getting caught up in a hectic and heavy schedule. Now, finally, I have gladly managed to find the time to finish off this piece. Behind the progression – A difficult song to choreograph that I haven’t choreographed fast rap songs in a long time, despite my musicality and visualising how I would like the movements to appear. After exploring experimental sessions and expanding my creativity, patience, and persistence to discover and unlock hidden movements. It’s okay to merge popular dance trends in choreography and to have FUN. As an artist, the importance of having fun reminds me of why I started dancing in the first place. Within passion comes a need to fuel and be self-motivated, starting from having fun. Hobby. Professional. Fun. Recycle. 'If you can’t stop thinking about it, don’t stop working on it.' JBL's campaign “Sound You Can See” produced by The Honey partnership & AFOM agency. The campaign launched JBL’s latest version of JBL Pulse - A Bluetooth portable speaker that streams music from any smartphone wirelessly, producing a clear and powerful sound, AND also features an amazing LED Pulse light and rhythm function. This clip is a demonstration of movement in sync with the rhythm of the beat and a Pulse 3, 360 degree light show. In orchestra with the music and my physical-sounds, plus the throbbing 360-degree lights, are combined to form a mesmerising dance which climaxes when the volume increases, until the treble and bass-line kick in. The advertising campaign ends with a British Sign Language phrase emphasising the tagline: “Sound You Can See” – Pulse 3. It was a fascinating experience!
