Also in the acting honours though were Tina – The Tina Turner Musical’s Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Caroline, Or Change’s Sharon D Clarke. The anticipation is properly building in the run up to the biggest night in the theatre calendar and now it has gone up a notch with news that all the nominated musicals will be performing at the Olivier Awards 2019 ceremony on 7 April at the Royal Albert Hall, plus The Lion King and Mamma Mia! will be celebrating 20 years in the West End. Oh, and did we mention that stars like Gloria Estefan and Katharine McPhee will be presenting awards?
After much-anticipation actors Sheila Atim and Giles Terera announced the nominations for the Olivier Awards 2019 today and it wasn’t long before the celebrations began for two West End musicals in particular. The acclaimed gender-bending revival of Sondheim’s Company and powerful Canadian show Come From Away are recognised in nine categories each. The King and I and the Queens of Six The Musical are close behind with six and five nominations respectively. Who do you think will come out top on the night?
While some commentators might have guessed that Six the Musical would be a big winner at the Offies 2019 Awards presented by Off West End, it was The Rink at Southwark Playhouse that ended the evening with a count of five gongs, including a double whammy win for actresses Gemma Sutton and Caroline O’Connor. How did your favourite do?

It seems that Marianne Elliott’s production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s Company at the Gielgud Theatre, featuring a female lead for the first time, hasn’t just been a favourite with audiences. The show won in both musical categories at the 2018 Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards today: for Best Musical & Best Designer for Bunny Christie.
Actress Rosalie Craig and director Marianne Elliott celebrated their wins at the 64th Evening Standard Theatre Awards, while Best Musical went to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s groundbreaking musical and leading man Jamael Westman received the Emerging Talent Award
