One item that has been occasionally outdoing Brexit on social media during the last 24 hours is the outflowing of love and admiration for the legendary Broadway artist Carol Channing – best known to many for her memorable performances in Hello, Dolly! – who has died at the age of 97. The lights of the Great White Way will dim for one minute this evening [16 January], the 55th anniversary of the Broadway opening of Dolly in 1964 in which she so brilliantly played Dolly Levi (over 5,000 times!) in a Tony-winning portrayal. Late Late Show host and lover of musicals James Corden teamed up with the stars of Mary Poppins Returns, Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda to celebrate some of the greatest musicals of all time, kicking off with Cabaret and finishing off with Mamma Mia! Our #FirstNightTakeover series continues with Perry O’Bree attending the West End opening of CAROLINE, OR CHANGE at the Playhouse Theatre, continuing in the West End to 9 February 2019 following sell-out seasons at Chichester and Hampstead. Perry was there at the after-party to catch up with several members of the cast including Sharon D Clarke (who “blew the roof off the Playhouse”), Naana Agyei-Ampadu, Alastair Brookshaw, Me’sha Bryan and Lauren Ward. It turned out to be quite an emotional night!
